How To Memorize Scripture

An Effective Method of Remembering Bible Verses

By C. Douglas Dodd s.b.g.

People have often asked me how is it that I have so many verses committed to memory. I do not intentionally set out to memorize verses by traditional means. I tried that in time past and had some success but not much. For instance I can quote Psalm chapter one which was learned by rote (ROTE, v.t. To fix in the memory by means of frequent repetition ourselves, or by hearing the repetition of others, without an effort of the understanding to comprehend what is repeated, and without the aid of rules or principles.) but at the same time I cannot recite the book of Titus which I have memorized twice.

So how do I do it?

I use the same bible year after year. I use the "Old Scofield Reference" bible. If I close my eyes I can almost see the words on the page because I am so familiar with that particular book. Upon seeing the words I can then recall them. (by the way... I use the OSRB because of the cross references not the notes, although some of the notes are good a lot of them cannot be recommended.

I study a lot. Which gives me continuous exposure to the words on the page.

I am not content with just reading the word but knowing what every word means, both alone and in its context. Once I know what the verse is about it is then easy to remember.

I group verses together by subject. This causes me to pull up verses in a logical sequence when needed.

I group verses together by contrast. This broadens my data base again causing verses to pop up in memory by group.

I use verses in my conversation with others. This keeps them fresh in my mind. When a certain topic or subject comes up I quote a verse that deals with that subject, thereby becoming a part of my speech patterns.

I meditate on verses.... specially ones I plan to preach or teach on.

I hope and trust this will help you to memorize the word regularly.
